A Solid Obstruction in the Main
Toys, brushes, and hygiene products. A cable retrieves or breaks them where a jetter would drive them further along the line.

OUR SERVICES
Cable machine and auger service for Johnston drains, gravity fed or on the city grinder system. Right machine, right head, camera pass afterward.
OVERVIEW
Before we put a cable in a Johnston line, we ask one question the other suburbs do not require: is this property on gravity sewer or on one of the roughly 341 grinder pumps the city maintains? A grinder unit behaves differently when it backs up, and running a cable at a problem that is actually a pump fault wastes a service call.
Once that is settled, Johnston augering is straightforward. Median build year here is around 2004, so the pipe is sound PVC and the blockages are things that went down it: wipes, hygiene products, hair, and construction debris. Those are exactly what a cable handles. Coatings are not, and when the camera shows one we recommend jetting instead.
All work is performed in compliance with the 2024 Uniform Plumbing Code as adopted by the State of Iowa.

WHEN A CABLE IS THE RIGHT TOOL
Cabling clears obstructions. These are the Johnston situations where it applies.
Toys, brushes, and hygiene products. A cable retrieves or breaks them where a jetter would drive them further along the line.
Flushable wipes leave the toilet intact and stop at the first grade change. In homes of this era they are the leading main line find.
Grout, mortar, and drywall slurry rinsed down a drain during a build harden inside the line and need a cutting head.
A closet auger works through the trapway without scratching the bowl, and it beats plunging repeatedly.
A branch line job. A drum machine clears it without opening the main line at all.
If the property is on a city grinder unit, we establish whether the pump or the drain line is at fault before cabling anything.
AUGER AND CABLE SERVICES
Fixture drains, branch lines, and the lateral out to the city system.
The private line from your building to the Johnston collection system, which the property owner maintains.
Trapway cleared without marking the porcelain, then a check on the closet flange and wax seal.
A cable handles light grease. Where the camera shows a glazed pipe wall we recommend jetting rather than repeating this visit.
Drum machines pull hair mats out of the trap arm instead of pushing them into the branch line.
Lint and detergent film narrow a standpipe over the years until a wash cycle overflows.
For homes on one of the city grinder units, we diagnose the drain line and the pump situation before recommending any work.
WHY CLOG BUSTERS
Establish the system, size the machine, clear the line, prove it on camera.
The first thing we determine on a Johnston call, because it changes the diagnosis, the access point, and sometimes who you should be calling.
Fixture, branch, or main. Undersized cable in a main line misses the blockage or wraps and lodges inside it.
Retrieval heads for objects, cutting heads for compacted debris, grease heads where cabling is the only access.
A recorded pass confirms the result. Johnston requires trade contractors to register with the Building Department before it will issue a permit, and ours is current.
Full volume through the line to confirm it carries, then the work area is returned to how we found it.
FAQ
Still stuck? Call the Des Moines shop at (515) 259-1991.
There will be a control panel with an alarm, usually on an exterior wall or in a utility area, and a tank lid in the yard. Johnston maintains roughly 341 of these citywide. If you are unsure, we can identify it on site immediately.
A cable is for obstructions and roots. A jetter is for coatings, meaning grease, sludge, and scale. Cabling a coated line bores a channel that closes again within months, so the camera decides which you actually need.
Not for routine drain cleaning. Plumbing installation and repair does require one, and Johnston additionally requires trade contractors to be registered with the Building Department before it will issue that permit. Registration is free but not optional.
Because pipe age is not the cause. The pipe is sound PVC. What blocks it is wipes, hair, hygiene products, and occasionally construction debris rinsed down a drain during the original build.
An oversized cable or a careless operator can. We match cable diameter to line size, pick the head to suit the blockage, and camera the result rather than assuming it went well.
Not to auger. We work through an existing cleanout. Excavation only comes up if the camera finds a break or collapse that no cable can address.
The property owner. Johnston Public Works maintains the public collection system and the grinder units, and the private lateral from your building to that connection is yours.
About a seven mile run and we operate 24 hours, so same-day is standard and a fully stopped main is treated as a priority call.
