OUR SERVICES
Cable machine and auger service for Clive drains on both sides of the county line. Correct machine for the line, camera verification on every main.
OVERVIEW
Clive splits across two counties at NW 142nd Street, and the drain work splits along roughly the same line. East of it the neighborhoods are older, the landscaping is mature, and root cutting in the lateral is a regular call. West of it the builds are newer and the auger work is mostly obstructions rather than intrusion.
Either way, a cable machine is the tool for solids and roots and the wrong tool for a coating. When the camera shows grease or scale glazing the pipe wall, we say so and quote jetting rather than booking the same auger job again in six months. Clive requires contractors to register with the city on top of the State of Iowa license, and ours is current.
All work is performed in compliance with the 2024 Uniform Plumbing Code as adopted by the State of Iowa.

WHEN A CABLE IS THE RIGHT TOOL
A cable machine has a specific job. These are the situations where it is the correct one.
Mature landscaping east of 142nd sends roots to any joint that weeps. A cutting head shears them back to the pipe wall.
Toys, brushes, and hygiene products. A cable retrieves or breaks the obstruction where a jetter would push it further down the line.
A closet auger works through the trapway without marking the porcelain, and it succeeds where repeated plunging does not.
A branch line problem. A small drum machine clears it without ever opening the main line.
Flow has to be restored before anything can be assessed. The cable opens it, the camera explains it.
If a section is cracked or offset, high pressure water is the wrong answer and we will choose a cable deliberately instead.
AUGER AND CABLE SERVICES
Fixture drains, branch lines, and the lateral out to the Clive sewer main.
The private lateral from your building to the city main, which is yours to maintain. Root cutting is the usual reason east of 142nd.
Established Clive streets have the tree canopy to prove it, and roots find every joint that has shifted or opened.
Trapway cleared without scratching the bowl, then a check on the closet flange and wax seal.
Cabling handles light grease. Heavy glazing on the pipe wall gets an honest jetting recommendation instead.
Drum machines pull the hair mat out of the trap arm rather than relocating it into the branch line.
Standpipes and basement floor drains, both easy to overlook until a wash cycle puts water on the floor.
WHY CLOG BUSTERS
Correct machine, correct head, camera afterward, registered with the city.
Fixture, branch, or main, each taking a different cable diameter. Undersized cable in a main line misses blockages or lodges in them.
Retrieval heads for objects, cutting heads for roots, grease heads where cabling is the only available access.
We pass the blockage repeatedly rather than opening a single channel and calling the line clear.
A recorded pass shows whether the pipe is genuinely open, and whether roots or a coating are going to bring you back.
Clive permits plumbing work through Construction Services in Community Development and requires local contractor registration. We hold both.
FAQ
Still stuck? Call the Des Moines shop at (515) 259-1991.
A cable is for obstructions and roots, and it works mechanically. A jetter is for coatings, meaning grease, sludge, and mineral scale, and it works with high pressure water. Cabling a coated line only bores a channel that closes over again.
No, routine drain cleaning is maintenance. Plumbing installation and repair does need one, through the Construction Services Division in Clive Community Development, and Clive also requires contractors to register with the city on top of their state license.
Because cabling cuts them but does not close the joint they entered through. Until that section is repaired or lined, roots will find the same moisture again, usually within a year.
A mismatched cable or a careless operator can. We size the cable to the line, choose the head to the blockage, and camera the result rather than assuming it went cleanly.
For a sink trap, that is reasonable. For a main line, rental machines are usually underpowered, and a cable that wraps and lodges in a lateral costs considerably more to retrieve than the original service call.
Not for augering. We work through an existing cleanout. Excavation only enters the picture if the camera finds a collapse or a break a cable cannot address.
You do. Clive Public Works maintains roughly 82 miles of public sanitary sewer, and the private lateral from your building to that main is the property owner responsibility.
About nine and a half miles from our shop and we run 24 hours, so same-day is normal and a fully stopped main is prioritized.
