A Kitchen Sink That Clogs on a Schedule
Rinse water leaves a grease film that hardens as it cools. If the clog returns within months of cabling, the coating has to come off the wall.

OUR SERVICES
Water jetting that strips grease, sludge, root fibers and silt off the walls of Urbandale drain and sewer lines, with a camera check before and after.
OVERVIEW
Hydro jetting cleans a drain or sewer line by driving water through a rotating nozzle that scours grease, sludge, silt and root fibers off the pipe wall, where a cable snake only punches a path through the middle. We at Clog Busters jet homes and businesses across Urbandale from our Des Moines branch, open 24 hours, and a camera goes into every line before the jetter does.
Grease is a leading reason an Urbandale kitchen line ends up needing a jetter. Under Section 52.067 of the Urbandale Municipal Code, a food service establishment must have its grease interceptor cleaned once fats, oils, grease and solids reach 25 percent of the design liquid level, and at least every three months. The same section bars enzymes, emulsifying chemicals or hot water as a way to dissolve that grease.
Mineral scale plays a smaller part here than many homeowners expect. The 2026 regional drinking water quality report covering Urbandale’s supply lists softening among the treatment steps, and names the L.D. McMullen plant on the Raccoon River as a source for parts of the city. In an older Urbandale drain, the crust narrowing the bore is more often corrosion from the cast iron itself.
Our hydro jetting service page explains the equipment. For a one-off clog, start with drain cleaning in Urbandale. For the pipe under the yard, see sewer services in Urbandale, and our Urbandale drain and sewer page covers the rest.
Hydro jetting is performed to the 2024 Uniform Plumbing Code, in force across Iowa since March 26, 2025.

WHEN JETTING FITS
Jetting is for sound pipe with something stuck to its walls. A camera tells us which kind of pipe you have.
Rinse water leaves a grease film that hardens as it cools. If the clog returns within months of cabling, the coating has to come off the wall.
Washer discharge carries lint, fabric fibers and detergent residue that knit together inside the standpipe and branch. Jetting flushes the mat out instead of poking a hole in it.
Sand and grit washed in from window wells or tracked across the basement settle in the trap and beyond. Water pressure moves it where a cable cannot.
A cutting head opens a root-choked joint but leaves a tangle of fibers in the pipe. A jetting pass carries the cuttings away so they cannot snag the next flush.
When the camera shows a crack, an offset joint or a missing pipe bottom, jet water can wash soil in around the break. We plan a repair for that pipe instead.
Cast iron that has scaled heavily and channeled along its bottom can be close to failure. We clean it gently or not at all, and show you the footage either way.
HYDRO JETTING SERVICES
From a single kitchen branch to the full building sewer, with a camera pass on each.
The pipe from the sink and disposal to the stack, cleaned back to full bore so new grease has nothing to grab onto.
Sinks, dish machines and floor sinks that drain to the grease interceptor, jetted after close so the kitchen keeps its hours.
Washer standpipes, laundry tubs and the branch they share, cleared of lint and soap buildup along their full length.
The whole run from the cleanout to the public sewer, jetted end to end and recorded on camera afterward.
A root nozzle shears intrusion at the joints, and the water stream sweeps the cut fibers out of the line.
Lines with a history of grease or roots, put on an interval set from what the camera shows rather than from the next backup.
WHY CLOG BUSTERS
Look first, pick the tool, clean the whole run, then prove it on camera.
We pick a cleanout that reaches the problem without cutting into a wall or floor, and note it if the line has none.
The camera identifies the pipe material, checks each joint, and shows whether grease, scale, silt or roots are causing the trouble.
Coated but sound pipe is jetted. A solid blockage might be cabled before the jetter goes in. Pipe that is breaking down is quoted for repair, not cleaned.
The nozzle travels from the cleanout all the way to the public sewer, since buildup rarely stops where the clog sat.
A second pass shows the cleaned wall, then we run water at volume to confirm the line carries a full load.
FAQ

Yes, when the pipe is sound and the pressure is matched to it. Older Urbandale homes may still have cast iron drains, and iron that has corroded thin or cracked should not take full pressure. We run a camera through the line before jetting. When the footage shows a failing wall, we leave the jetter in the truck and talk through repairs.
Less than in many places, because the water is softened before it reaches Urbandale taps. The 2026 regional water quality report from Central Iowa Water Works and Des Moines Water Works lists softening among the treatment steps at its plants. Scale that narrows an older drain is more often corrosion from cast iron, which jetting can remove while the pipe wall is still solid. A camera shows which kind of buildup is in your line.
Section 52.067 of the Urbandale Municipal Code limits water leaving a restaurant grease interceptor or trap to 400 milligrams per liter of fats, oils and grease. The interceptor must be cleaned when grease and solids reach 25 percent of its design liquid level, and at least every three months unless the WRA Director approves a longer interval. A waste hauler licensed by the Des Moines Metropolitan Wastewater Reclamation Authority must do that cleaning. Jetting the kitchen lines keeps grease moving into the interceptor instead of setting up in the pipe.
Not as a fix. Hot water and enzyme products loosen grease only long enough to move it downstream, where it cools and sets again in a colder stretch of pipe. Urbandale's code goes further for restaurants and bars enzymes, emulsifying chemicals and hot water as a grease abatement method in interceptors. At home, wipe greasy pans into the trash before washing them.
Yes, once lint and soap residue have built up enough to slow the standpipe or make it overflow. Washer water carries fibers that mat together in the branch line, and a cable usually just pokes a hole through that mat. Jetting rinses the buildup out along the whole branch.
No, jetting cuts and flushes roots but cannot seal the joint they grew through. Urbandale's recommended tree list, updated June 5, 2025, includes fast growers such as black willow, sycamore and London planetree, and a large tree near a building sewer can send roots toward any leaking joint. If roots return after jetting, the camera shows whether that joint needs a spot repair, a trenchless repair where the pipe allows, or a maintenance interval.
As often as the camera says it needs, and no more. A busy restaurant line may need it every few months, while a home kitchen line can go years between cleanings. We set the first interval from the footage after the initial jetting and adjust it from there.
Our Des Moines branch on Vandalia Road handles every Urbandale jetting call, 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. A line that is backing up now is handled ahead of scheduled work. Maintenance jetting for businesses can be booked around operating hours.
