Water Rising in the Basement Floor Drain
The basement floor drain sits lowest in the house, so a blocked main line pushes water up there before anywhere else. If it appears when the washer drains or a toilet flushes, the main line needs attention.

OUR SERVICES
Kitchen, bath, basement floor and main line drain cleaning for Grand Rapids homes, matched to the age and material of your pipe. Served from our branch on 44th Street SE, open 24 hours a day.
OVERVIEW
Drain cleaning in Grand Rapids works best when the method fits the pipe, because many neighborhoods here were built from the 1940s through the early 1970s and still drain through the pipe they were built with. Orangeburg is a bituminous fiber pipe, made of wood pulp bonded with pitch, that was laid in a lot of postwar housing. In Grand Rapids those lines are now old enough to soften, flatten and in some cases collapse. Forcing a cutting head through a deformed Orangeburg section can make it worse, so we find out what the line is made of before we choose a tool.
Grease is the most common thing we pull out of kitchen lines in the city. The City of Grand Rapids Environmental Services Department warns that cooking oil, kitchen grease and meat fat poured down a drain collect inside pipes and lead to sewer backups and basement flooding, and it tells residents to cool grease and throw it away in a sealed container (City of Grand Rapids environmental tips). Old branch lines that are rough inside hold onto that grease faster than new pipe does.
We at Clog Busters run our West Michigan crews from the Grand Rapids branch at 584 44th Street SE. We clear drains for homeowners in Grand Rapids and nearby Wyoming, Kentwood, Walker and Grandville. Read how our drain cleaning service works, when we use hydro jetting, or what else the Clog Busters Grand Rapids branch handles.
Work is performed to the plumbing rules adopted by the State of Michigan: the 2021 Michigan Plumbing Code, effective March 12, 2024, and the 2015 Michigan Residential Code for one and two family homes.

WARNING SIGNS
In older Grand Rapids homes, drain trouble shows up at the lowest fixture first.
The basement floor drain sits lowest in the house, so a blocked main line pushes water up there before anywhere else. If it appears when the washer drains or a toilet flushes, the main line needs attention.
A tub that gurgles while the sink drains means air is forced through a partly blocked branch, past where a plunger reaches.
Holiday cooking sends extra grease down Grand Rapids kitchen drains right when the weather turns cold. A sink that drains slower every week after that is coating up from the inside.
Grand Rapids has a heavily planted street tree canopy, and roots chase the moisture at old pipe joints. A main line that slows every spring and clears in fall usually points to roots.
Wipes are a frequent cause, including wipes sold as flushable. A sewer line that has flattened with age is another, since it no longer has the full opening it was built with.
A floor drain that rarely sees water can dry out its trap and let sewer gas in. If refilling the trap does not stop the smell, a cracked line or a vent problem needs a closer look.
DRAIN CLEANING SERVICES
From a single bathroom sink to the main line that runs under the yard toward the street.
Cooled grease narrows a kitchen line one layer at a time. Light buildup clears with a cable; packed grease usually needs jetting.
Hair and soap knot together at the trap and the first fitting below it. We pull the mat out of the line so it does not lodge farther down the branch.
We clear wipes, paper buildup and dropped objects, then check that the toilet seats and seals properly when it goes back down.
A backed up floor drain is often a main line problem showing itself. We clear it and check the main so the water stays down.
Many Grand Rapids main lines from the 1940s through early 1970s are Orangeburg or clay. We confirm the material, choose a method that will not tear a weak section, and camera the line once it flows.
Lint and detergent residue settle in basement laundry lines. Clearing them early keeps washer water off the floor.
WHY CLOG BUSTERS
Match the method to the pipe, clear it, and show you the result.
We start from the fixtures that are backing up and work toward the cleanout that reaches the blockage most directly, usually inside the basement in older Grand Rapids homes.
Cast iron, clay, Orangeburg and plastic each handle cleaning differently. Knowing which one we are working in tells us how hard a cable or jetter can safely work.
A cable machine cuts through roots, wipes and soft clogs. Packed grease and scale get hydro jetting, which scrubs the pipe wall instead of punching a narrow hole through the buildup.
With water moving again, we run a camera through the line to check for roots, flattened sections, offset joints or breaks that would bring the clog right back.
We walk you through what the camera showed, flush the line hard to prove it drains, and leave the area clean.
FAQ

The cost of drain cleaning in Grand Rapids depends on where the clog is, how we reach it and which method it takes. A bathroom sink cleared at the trap costs less than a main line that takes a jetter plus camera work. You hear the price before any work starts.
Grand Rapids property owners are responsible for keeping their own private plumbing in good repair, according to the City of Grand Rapids Water System Rules and Regulations (updated January 23, 2026). Where your private line meets the public sewer can vary by property, so we confirm it with the city before any digging is planned.
An Orangeburg sewer line can often be cleared, but it has to be done carefully. Orangeburg is a fiber pipe common in Grand Rapids homes built from the 1940s through the early 1970s, and with age it softens, flattens and can collapse. We use a gentler setup and camera it afterward, and if the pipe is failing we tell you instead of clearing it again and again.
We recommend skipping chemical drain cleaners. They sit on the clog and on the pipe at the same time, which is hard on the older cast iron and fiber lines found in many Grand Rapids homes. A cable or jetter removes the blockage without that wear.
Roots block drains in spring because that is when trees grow fastest and push toward moisture at loose or cracked pipe joints. The City of Grand Rapids Forestry Division cares for more than 75,000 street trees, many planted in the strip between sidewalk and street that private sewer lines often pass under. Cabling cuts the roots out, and a camera shows whether the joint needs repair to end the cycle.
Flushable wipes are not safe for drains. The City of Grand Rapids Environmental Services Department says wipes do not break down in the sewer system and cause clogs and backups, even when labeled flushable. In older pipe they snag on rough spots and build into a plug, so they belong in the trash.
Winter does not stop drain cleaning in Grand Rapids, though it changes how we reach some lines. The National Weather Service lists a normal of 77.6 inches of snow a year at Grand Rapids (1991 to 2020 normals), and westerly winds carry lake effect bands inland to the city. With outdoor cleanouts often buried, we usually work from an indoor basement cleanout.
