Before You Buy
A general home inspection is visual and usually leaves the sewer lateral unseen. A recorded scope of that line gives you evidence to use before closing.

OUR SERVICES
Sewer camera inspections and whole-property plumbing checks for Ankeny buyers, owners and landlords. You keep the recorded footage and a written summary of what we found.
OVERVIEW
A plumbing inspection in Ankeny is a documented look at a property’s water and drain systems: a camera run through the sewer lateral plus a check of fixtures, drains, supply lines, the water heater and its visible venting. We at Clog Busters inspect Ankeny homes, rentals and commercial buildings from our Des Moines branch on Vandalia Road, and the buyer or owner keeps the recorded footage and a written summary.
The year a house was built changes what we look for. According to the City of Ankeny’s lead service line page, a city ordinance dated July 1, 1974 required copper or plastic water service lines, so a home built after that date does not have a lead service line. Homes built earlier may still have a lead or galvanized line, and the city has sent letters to owners where it holds no record of the material.
On older homes, we note the material of the exposed service pipe where it enters the building. See the plumbing inspection services we offer at every branch, our drain camera inspections in Ankeny, and the Ankeny service area page.
Inspections follow the 2024 Uniform Plumbing Code, in effect statewide in Iowa since March 26, 2025. Our inspection adds to a home inspection or a City of Ankeny rental inspection and does not replace either one.

WHEN TO BOOK
The best time is before money changes hands or walls come open, while the findings can still shape the decision.
A general home inspection is visual and usually leaves the sewer lateral unseen. A recorded scope of that line gives you evidence to use before closing.
Older Ankeny homes may still carry a lead or galvanized water service line. If the city mailed you a service line letter, an inspection tells you which material you have.
When the same drain needs clearing a third time, the cause is in the pipe. A camera run shows whether it is a low spot, a root entry or a cracked fitting.
A kitchen or bath remodel opens walls and floors once. Checking the drains and supply lines first lets you replace weak sections while everything is exposed.
Ankeny inspects registered rental units every two years. A plumbing check beforehand turns up leaks, slow drains and water heater problems while there is still time to fix them.
Restaurants, offices and multi-unit buildings carry more fixtures and longer drain runs. Documenting their condition at purchase or lease signing sets a baseline for later disputes.
INSPECTION SERVICES
Book one or combine them. Every inspection ends with footage, a written summary and no obligation to hire us for repairs.
A recorded camera run of the lateral from the cleanout toward the city main, with pipe material, joints and defects noted by distance.
Fixtures, drains, visible supply lines, shutoff valves, the water heater and its visible venting, checked and written up as a baseline.
For older homes, we identify the exposed water service pipe where it enters the building: copper, plastic, galvanized steel or possibly lead.
For a drain that keeps backing up, a camera inspection that finds the cause instead of clearing the line one more time.
The drain and supply lines behind the planned work, inspected before demolition so the remodel budget accounts for them.
Unit by unit condition checks for rental owners and commercial buyers, organized so each finding ties to a specific unit or fixture.
WHY CLOG BUSTERS
Check every system, record what we see, and leave you the evidence.
We find where the water service enters the building, note the pipe material, and check the main shutoff and visible supply lines for leaks.
Each sink, tub, shower and toilet is run for flow, drainage and leaks, including basement and guest bath fixtures that rarely get used.
We look at the tank, its visible venting, the temperature setting, the relief valve, and whether the discharge pipe ends near the floor over a drain or pan.
A camera travels the lateral and records the run, with any defect noted by distance on the footage and marked from the surface.
You receive the recording and a plain summary sorted into what is sound, what to watch and what needs work, with no obligation to have us do any of it.
FAQ

Usually not. A general home inspection is a visual review of the house, and a camera run through the sewer lateral is typically a separate service. Buyers who want to know the lateral's condition book a sewer camera inspection alongside the home inspection. Our inspection adds to the home inspector's report and does not replace it.
Start with the build year. The City of Ankeny says a July 1, 1974 ordinance required copper or plastic service lines, so homes built after that date do not have a lead line. For older homes, the city publishes a list of addresses whose service line material is undocumented and asks owners to complete a service line survey. We can identify the exposed pipe where it enters your home so you have an answer for that survey.
The city's rental checklist looks for working, leak-free plumbing and adequate hot water. Running hot water has to reach at least 110 degrees, an individual unit's water heater cannot be set above 120 degrees, and the relief valve discharge pipe must end within 6 inches of the floor. Strong sewer gas odor, major leaks and clogged or very slow drains are also listed as violations. A plumbing check beforehand helps a landlord find those items early, but only the city's inspector can pass the unit.
Every two years. Under Chapter 177 of the Ankeny Municipal Code, the Property Maintenance and Housing Code, rental units must be registered and inspected by city staff, and the city lists a two year cycle for apartments, duplexes and single-family rentals. The 2024 edition of that code took effect July 1, 2025. Booking a plumbing check ahead of the city's visit leaves time for repairs.
Yes. Every inspection ends with a written summary and the recorded camera footage. Both are yours to keep and share with a seller, a contractor or anyone else. The summary separates what is in good shape from what needs attention now and what to watch.
Yes, and many buyers book a sewer camera inspection for that reason. A recording of a cracked or sagging lateral shows the seller exactly what was found and where. Repair requests and price changes stay between you, the seller and your agents.
You get a summary that records the system as sound. A clean result on an older Ankeny home is useful, because it tells a buyer the lateral and water heater are not an immediate expense. You keep the footage as a baseline to compare against if problems show up later.
Yes, if walls or floors will be opened. Inspecting the drains and supply lines before demolition shows whether old sections should be replaced while they are exposed. On homes built before 1974, it is also a chance to check older piping running through the remodel area.
