DES MOINES BRANCH
Clog Busters clears drains and repairs sewer lines for Altoona homes and businesses from our Des Moines branch at 3950 Vandalia Rd. Our crews work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and we run a camera through the line before we quote a repair. In Altoona that matters, because the owner is responsible for the sewer line all the way to the city main.

WHO OWNS THE LINE IN ALTOONA
In Altoona, the homeowner is responsible for the sewer line from the house all the way to the city main, and that line often runs past the property line and sometimes under the street. The City of Altoona states this on its service lines page and suggests asking your homeowners insurance company about service line coverage, since a repair under the road can mean removing pavement and sidewalk.
That is why an accurate diagnosis comes before any digging. We run a camera from a cleanout toward the main, record what it shows, and use a locator to mark where the lateral runs and how deep it sits. Roots, a sag where soil settled and a cracked joint each call for a different fix. Where the pipe allows, we replace sewer line trenchless.
House age adds a second Altoona problem. The city’s Footing Drain Disconnection Program explains that in homes built before 1975, the footing tile around the foundation was often tied into the basement sanitary line. During a hard rain, that groundwater rides into the sewer, and the basement floor drain is where a backup shows first. Chapter 101 of the Altoona City Code governs the disconnection, city staff inspect before work begins, and grant funds go to homeowners who apply first. Our camera can show whether a tile line still enters your sewer.
Altoona keeps adding homes. The city’s demographics page lists 19,576 residents in the 2020 Census and an estimate of 22,598 by July 1, 2024. Newer houses skip the footing tile issue but still see grease buildup in kitchen lines and laterals that shift as backfill settles.
The city’s Wastewater Department maintains over 100 miles of public sanitary sewer, sends flow to the Des Moines Wastewater Reclamation Authority for treatment, and offers residents a free inspection to help find a drain problem. When the problem is on your side, we take the call at any hour. Plumbing work in Iowa follows the 2024 Uniform Plumbing Code, in effect statewide since March 26, 2025.

ALTOONA SERVICES
Kitchen, laundry and basement floor drains in Altoona homes clog with grease, lint and hair. We clear the line and tell you if the pipe is part of the problem.
Learn moreAltoona houses from before 1975 can have cast iron drains and floor drains that crack or corrode with age. We replace the failed section and leave sound pipe in place.
Learn moreA drain auger, also called a snake, cuts through hair, wipes and root tips inside the pipe. We use it on single-fixture clogs and to open a line far enough to fit a camera.
Learn moreA camera shows the inside of the pipe from the house toward the main. Altoona owners answer for that whole run, so you see the footage before we quote a repair.
Learn moreA transmitter on the camera head lets us mark a drain's path and depth from above. Repair openings stay in one spot.
Learn moreHigh-pressure water scours grease and roots off sound pipe walls. Altoona restaurants use it to keep kitchen lines flowing. We camera first, because a cracked pipe should not be jetted.
Learn moreAn Altoona lateral can cross under the street to reach the main. We repair or replace damaged sections, trenchless where the pipe allows.
Learn moreWe trace the lateral from your cleanout to the city main and mark it, so you know whether a repair falls in the yard, the parkway or the road.
Learn moreBuying an Altoona home built before 1975? Pair a plumbing inspection with a sewer camera, which can also show whether the footing tile still drains into the sanitary line.
Learn moreLeaking supply lines, failing shutoff valves, running toilets and worn faucets. Leak detection comes first, so a wall or ceiling is opened only where the leak is.
Learn moreSewage at a floor drain after a heavy rain or a pipe that splits in a January cold snap will not wait for morning. Our Des Moines branch answers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Learn moreNo hot water, a leaking tank or a pilot that will not stay lit. We repair gas and electric water heaters, replace tanks at the end of their life and install to Iowa code.
